While upholding the warm, groovy vibe that the band is well known for, Men I Trust have been able to beautifully incorporate new styles to them, giving it a fresh feeling to the band, yet a nostalgic sound. For both the album cover artwork and the music video for Ring of Past use found footage and imagery from the National Film Board of Canada, and visuals from `Canada Vignettes: Love on Wheels', 1979, which was directed by Ben Low and Ian Ranki. The short film depicts a love story between an English boy and a French girl that takes place at a roller skating rink, exploring the theme of love and connection in a unique and touching way.
The album artwork for Ring of Past is more representative of what the music is representative of, in terms of the environment the artist wants to transport you to through the music, in this case a roller skating rink. The clear themes throughout the song, and it's visually representative counterparts, are first loves, youthful memories and nostalgia, as well as being extremely sentimental.
When looking at the music video and the album artwork when listening to the song it is easy for the listeners to picture their own memories of childhood and youthful romance, allowing each listener to attach their own emotions to the song, creating a connection between themselves and the lyricist. The song's dreamy and funky style allows you to envision yourself skating around in loops while listening to this song. This is furtherly reinforced through the album cover artwork, which shows a couple skating together and holding onto each other, depicting the themes of romance and reminiscing about a past lover, while wanting to relive your youth through the memories including a loved one.
