Matthew Cooper Artwork.jpg

Matthew Cooper is a British graphic designer and illustrator. Cooper primarily works within the music sector, creating album artwork and poster designs for musicians, most notably the Arctic Monkeys, who he has worked frequently.

I chose to look at Cooper’s work as he has created some of my favourite album covers for the Artic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets, and wanted to explore his other work, and I think Cooper's work is a good example of how effective minimalism is in the world of album artwork.

During my research I found that despite his covers for the Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets I only found a few other pieces I enjoyed. His album design for the born Cages album ‘I’m Glad I’m Not Me’ and Weatherless’ ‘The Maproom’ album artwork were two pieces that I really enjoyed. Whereas I am not personally a fan of some of his other pieces. I think I personally enjoy his more minimalistic cover artwork, this is because I find it stands out in my mind more, and is more rememberable, for example his iconic design for the AM album, or the Tranquility Base Hotel  and Casino. These two covers use the negative space in the deisgns to highlight the focal points, making them stand out so clearly and become engraved in your head.
