In this album, singer-songwriter Colde conveys his own thoughts about Idealism, described in the album as “A mental attitude that strives for the realisation of some ultimate purpose or value“. Throughout the album Colde experiments with genre and creates a beautiful blend of tracks that are very distinctive and unique.
Starting the album off with a shock, it begins with the track Lighter, this a new sound for Colde as he uses a more punk-rock style, compared to his usual light and soft music. The change in genre was a revelation for fans, with one fan saying “the track goes hard and it's mind blowing, i never thought i would be headbanging to Colde.” This switch up in genre, in my opinion, is represented in the central part of the album cover where there seems to be a visual disruption, where there are what looks to be waves crashing into each other. It is important to note that the start of the song, and album, begins with the sound of a lighter being set alight.
The album continues with the songs Wolf, The Museum, and Dream, all of which, I would say, are in Colde’s traditional style. These tracks play so smoothly with the R&B vibe that Colde is perfect at creating, alongside this the songs are super rich in vocals and instrumentation. These records are effortlessly stunning, and Colde is able to mix R&B perfectly with dreamy bedroom pop elements to create such smooth tracks that are an easy listen but also a perfect and enjoyable listen.
The next song Tunnel brings the album to a pause, the track feels almost like an interlude. This record is so beautifully crafted, by combining a stunning piano instrumental with soft vocals and beats to create a smooth song that gives the listener time to reflect.
In my personal opinion the next song, A Song Nobody Knows, is the star track on the album. The emotion in the song creates a notalgia and sense of longing. The lyrics and feeling of heart-break only escalates alongside the orchestration. The heartfelt nature of the song cannot be missed, as well as its beauty. The instrumental to this song feels so well crafted to suit the heart aching lyrics, the pause in the music where the sound of the guitar string noise can be heard before the instrumental builds shows the raw emotion put into the song, and adds that feeling of being handcrafted and honest. This track flows so well into the final song on the album, Blue Candle, another song filled with emotion, yet has a softer sound, giving the feeling that the singer has more closure. You can hear the sound of a candle burning and crackling subtly throughout the song, and towards the end we hear the flame being blown out, which created the perfect end to the album.
I think this exploratory nature is represented well in the album cover as it seems to show a combination of smoothness and turbulence, this can also be representative of Colde’s definition of the word idealism itself.
The album cover for this release is a piece that captured my attention from the moment it was released, the simple imagery is able to encapsulate the album so well. Which is why I think it drew my attention so much. As idealism is an album I listen to often, I have to say the artwork that perfectly captures the essence of the music, and how it varies within.
